Background: A mining company in Tanzania sought to improve driver safety and reduce fatigue-related accidents in their vehicle fleet. They partnered with Sicuro to implement their Artificial Intelligence Fatigue Monitoring Solution (AIFMS) across their vehicles.

Implementation: Sicuro installed the AIFMS in the client's fleet, including in a vehicle that would later be involved in an incident. The system was designed to detect signs of driver fatigue and alert both the driver and management to potential safety risks.

Incident: Several days after installation, a driver embarked on an early morning journey in one of the AIFMS-equipped vehicles. After several hours of driving, the vehicle veered off the road and rolled over into a steep ditch. The location was outside of GSM signal coverage, potentially delaying response times.

AIFMS Findings: Upon retrieval of the AIFMS data, the system revealed:

  • Multiple recorded events leading up to the incident where the driver was falling asleep at the wheel.
  • The system alerted the driver, each time keeping him from falling asleep at the wheel.
  • The final event showed the driver succumbing to extreme fatigue, resulting in the vehicle running off the road.

The incident occurred in an area without GSM coverage, highlighting the importance of the system's ability to function and record data independently of cellular networks and retrieve for incident management.

The data provided crucial information about the cause of the accident, which may not have been available otherwise given the remote location.

Lessons Learned:

  • Early warning systems like AIFMS can play a critical role in preventing fatigue-related accidents.
  • There may be a need for real-time intervention capabilities or a satellite-enabled fallback, especially in areas with limited connectivity. This is subjective to the client’s budget, but the technology is available with Sicuro
  • The incident underscores the importance of comprehensive fatigue management policies, including adequate rest periods for drivers on long journeys.

While the AIFMS successfully detected the driver's fatigue, the incident highlights the need for a multi-faceted approach to fatigue management in mining operations. The case demonstrates both the potential of AI-driven safety solutions and the ongoing challenges in preventing fatigue-related accidents in remote locations. The mining organization has started to review their driver education programs on fatigue management. They are also planning to implement additional policies on maximum driving durations and mandatory rest periods supported by Sicuro’s installed IVMS system. The organization uses the AIFMS system data daily to monitor drivers for their well-being and the company's overall efficiency.
